Govermnent bias In favour of foreign
bad practice is killing an industry."

From Midland Pig Producers Ltd to past Chairman Bob Gale.

In the last year: • 2,000 pig farmers have gone out of business - many bankrupt. • 25 have committed suicide. • Thousands of jobs have been lost. British feed and welfare standards are the best in the world yet the Government still refuses to ban the sale of imported pork products not produced to UK standards.

Pig producers face 3 months jail if they contravene UK welfare, veterinary, or feed regulations - under the Agriculture (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1968.

Foreign producers enjoy much lower production costs and a completely free access to our home market for their illegal products. The British public believes in fair play, but they need to be protected from buying inferior (non fair play) pork, bacon, ham etc. Why doesn’t the Government back its own animal welfare commitments for a change?

"Carers are still not being offered
an assessment when they should be."

Pat Hamilton from Exeter writes:

Your comments, in the April / May issue of Consumer News, that Carers’ National Association (CNA) "launched an assessment programme for Carers" may be misunderstood.

They actually launched a new booklet about Carers’ assessments, to replace an earlier one. They are both a useful guide to alert Carers to the Carers Recognition and Services Act. CNA does not itself assess Carers.

Despite leaflets and an increasing amount of media coverage about Carers, many Carers are still not being offered an assessment when they should be. Some Social Services Staff do not tell Carers about their rights. Pat Hamilton is a Carer and a member of the Carers’ National Association.
