The Builders Quality Mark was launched to the public in May in Birmingham and Somerset as pilot schemes. There is also to be a Consumer Support Network in each area. These pilot schemes will, if successful, lead to a National scheme to link consumers with reputable builders, plumbers and other building trades. After six months the pilot schemes will be reviewed to see if they have actually provided a means for members of the public to find builders that proved to be satisfactory.
It all depends on how the builders are found, and their work evaluated. One wonders how the Croydon Council Scheme, which has now been running for a couple of years, is working and whether lessons learned can be passed on to the organisers of this interesting initiative.
The Quality Mark Hotline is 0845 300 80 40 and the contact at the Department of Trade and Industry is Mike Metherell 020 7944 5666. We have been promised more details of this interesting Government initiative. One wonders whether the Birmingham Consumer Group has noticed the pilot scheme in operation.
