What’s on my record?

Last October the Scottish, National and Welsh Consumer Councils along with the General Consumer Council for Northern Ireland launched a new consumer rights guide.

What's on my record? is a user-friendly, plain English guide for consumers that clearly sets out their data protection rights and, more importantly, provides information on how to go about exercising them. The guide covers general rights over records held by private firms, such as household utility companies, shops and mail order companies, as well as those held by public sector organisations. There are separate sections on credit reference records, education, health, housing, social work and medical records. Each section gives details on: what information consumers are allowed access to

  1. how long it may take to get the information
  2. what it may cost
  3. how to complain
  4. how to correct information if it is wrong
  5. how to claim compensation

This guide is available to download free of charge from NCC's website. It is a publication that will have wide appeal to many groups and we feel that this guide may be of specific interest to NCF members. It is recommended that you take a moment to check out the site, which can be found at
